Opportunities unfold in Toastmasters

Our club here and beyond, opportunities unfold to learn, grow, meet and connect. Bangor Toastmasters Club can be the runway to thriveability.

Bangor Toastmasters Club #897 is part of an international educational organization, Toastmasters International.   TMI (Toastmasters International) was founded in October 1924 by Ralph C. Smedley.  Our club was one the first thousand clubs chartered by Toastmasters. Toastmasters now exceeds 335, 000 members worldwide spanning 142 countries.

In Toastmasters we talk about being a selfish and selfless oriented organization. When a member first joins, the goals are more self-centered. A member could join to gain confidence, become a better speaker or leader, or enjoy the social connections with fellow members.  As one grows as a leader, the goals are less “me oriented” and become more “we oriented.”

Toastmasters International Mission’s to empower individuals to become more effective communicators and leaders. Since 1951, Bangor Toastmasters Club has shared that mission. As a club, our mission is:

We provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members

are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills,

resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.

In Toastmasters, we can strive for individual goals and/or club goals.  Toastmasters established the Distinguished Club Program to recognize the individual clubs and districts performance in achieving its mission. The Distinguished Club Program (DCP) awards points to clubs in the areas of membership, education, training, and administration.

Why is the Distinguished Club Program (DCP) important? A club that performs well in the DCP provides a higher quality club experience for all of its members. Each aspect of the DCP is designed to enhance the enjoyment and reinforce the supportive atmosphere for each member, every time the club meets. There are three levels of recognition: Distinguished Club, Selected Distinguished Club, and Presidential Distinguished Club. Each year, the Distinguished Club Program runs from July 1 through June 30. Toastmasters International tracks each of its clubs and district’s progress.

In June 2017, our club earned the Presidential Distinguished club award. On a ten point scale, we earned nine. In past years, we have earned Selected Distinguished club, which is earning at least seven points out of ten points. Woohoo.
